Marcelo Pinheiro

Marcelo Pinheiro joined Economics Consulting Services in 2011 as a Director of Financial Analysis Services. Dr. Pinheiro has earned a Ph.D. in Economics with specialization in Finance from Princeton University in 2003 and subsequently worked as a professor in business schools and as a litigation consultant.  Dr. Pinheiro has extensive experience both in academia as well as in the private sector.

 

Dr. Pinheiro primary research interests cover corporate finance, corporate governance, financial institutions, and asset pricing.  Current events in the financial landscape and associated regulatory issues have always inspired his work leading him to conduct research, for example, on issues at the nexus of real estate and financial markets. His research has been presented in professional meetings and published in peer-reviewed journals.

 

As for his private sector experience, Dr. Pinheiro has previously worked in complex financial litigation matters and as an economist and risk analyst in his native Brazil. The cases he has worked on provide him with a strong background on real-world applications of finance theory as well as with knowledge on the legal and regulatory aspects of many financial market issues. His expertise includes asset pricing, portfolio allocation, banking, real estate, corporate finance, and credit markets.  In his prior work as a litigation consultant he has conducted analysis on a wide range of cases including:

  • Calculation of damages in ERISA litigation cases;
  • Event studies to measure the impact of company specific news on stock prices;
  • Valuation of private equity deals;
  • Econometric analysis of alleged manipulation in energy markets;
  • Issues related to mergers and acquisitions in the ocean carrier freight-forwarding industry;
  • Valuation of Auction Rate Securities (ARS) in the context of the 2008 ARS market failure;
  • Disputes related to commercial paper and bankruptcy preference;
  • Valuation of commercial paper during times of financial distress;
  • Pricing of privately placed convertible securities, fairness of such deal, and valuation of the stock underlying the convertible bond;
  • Analysis of adequacy of portfolio diversification strategies;
  • Pricing of Argentine government bonds during the Argentine crisis.
